About us

Tony Hughes formed Hughes Enterprise Law Practice when he returned to his home town of Bristol in 2003. He identified the need for a new way of providing commercial law services to small and medium-sized businesses, as well as the people who run them. His approach is to work with every client, sharing his 30 years of legal experience (much of which has been gained whilst working in a top 50 law firm) to inform, enlighten and empower them – above all helping them to achieve their business goals. The firm has built up a network of associated firms and services which help to meet the core legal need of its business clients.

What makes us so different?

Often, all you need is someone at the end of the phone – the comfort that comes from that person telling you that there is nothing to worry about or that they can help you. Many larger businesses have an in-house lawyer or Company Secretary who has a broad knowledge of the law affecting his employer’s business. This person is there to give you an initial view as to the way you should tackle your legal issues. Their advice is detailed, where appropriate, but most importantly reflects the priority you put on the financial implications of your actions. They may be able to handle the matter themselves but, if not, they can help you to appoint and manage another expert professional.

Many small and medium-sized businesses cannot afford to employ such a person but still require that kind of service. We can provide this. With our regular clients we develop an understanding of their business and can therefore provide legal advice which fits best with their commercial objectives.
We encourage all of our clients to telephone us for an informal chat so that we can work together to establish the best course of action. We’ll do our best to give you practical, constructive advice, grounded in experience and common sense.

Relationships

What most of our clients value is the relationship with us; the fact that we know their business and we know them is important to us.

If you aren’t convinced already, what else might you want to know?

'Tony Hughes has a wealth of experience in commercial and personnel law. Tony was of great assistance to me in an employment case, clearly defining the legal position for both parties. In addition his negotiating skills ensured that a mutually acceptable position was reached in a relatively short period of time, given the complexities involved. The most impressive aspect of dealing with Tony, was his clear understanding of business at a grass roots level. There is no doubt that he would be a great asset for small and large businesses both to prevent them “wandering” into future problems, and should they find themselves there, to get them out.'         Miles Kitching

'Enterprise Law provided the legal expertise to resolve a commercial issue with a business I was half owner of. Because of Enterprise, the situation was resolved quickly and legally. His insight and knowledge allowed me to sell my half of the business, and attain the outcome I wanted. Many thanks.'       Matthew Clark
